Origin — why the name

ha·la·tion

/ həˈleɪʃ(ə)n / — noun, photographic

The soft red-orange bloom around bright highlights when light passes through film emulsion and bounces back from the layer behind.

Technically, it's a flaw — an artifact of the medium. In practice, it's one of the most recognisable signatures of celluloid: the warmth that digital cinema spends millions trying to recreate.

It's what happens at the edge of the frame, around the highlights, where something beautiful emerges from an interaction with the medium.

That's what we believe this technology should be in a production: the warm edge around the work, not the centre of it. The bloom, not the source of the light.
